My Kindle arrived in the mail a month ago. I said I would read every night before bed. Have I?
If you said yes, then give yourself a cookie! So far I haven’t paid for any books, but the free ones have been entertaining enough. I’ve noticed the top free books are either very Christian, very dirty, or classics like Alice in Wonderland.
I downloaded a bunch of samples too, but haven’t quite decided what my first paid book should be. Probably Hitchhiker’s because I’m a geek so it’s like a law that I have to read it.
What I like so far:
- Not having to hold a book open
- I can read with my hands under a blanket
- Being able to switch between books in a few seconds
- Being able to make the font size bigger
- I haven’t had to charge it since I got it (with wi-fi on)
- Convenient to travel with
- I can download a sample of anything before I buy it
- Ordering books from the web is really simple and fast and they get sent to the kindle immediately. If I needed to read something RIGHT NOW I could.
- I can read my pdf cookbooks on it
- With Calibre, I can convert pretty much anything w/out DRM to a format kindle can read
What I don’t like:
- I haven’t found a case that I like for a reasonable price (<$30)
- Even older books can be $10 and some ebooks are more expensive than the paperback version
- It’s hard to pick out a book to read from so many choices
If anyone wants to help with that last bullet, I’m open to suggestions.
Ah, I’m so excited for you XD I just got my Bebook as an early birthday present from my mom today, and I’m so psyched! It came with 15 titles, so I’m set for now =P I’m not sure what kind of books you like, but you should check out David Sedaris. He has a few books which are mostly ‘memoirs’, but they are extremely absurd and (imo) incredibly funny. I also recommend Sarah’s Key to everyone who asked me which book they should read ^^
I love my Kindle!! It’s so freaking awesome. I’m glad you mostly love it.
Covers really are expensive but once you find one you really like I figure it is really worth it since you’re only buying one, y’know? Have you tried etsy? There are tons of shops that sell ereader covers there.
yes, but there’s like 50 I like equally, so much like the books, it’s hard to pick one
Hmm, I’m still not totally convinced to get a Kindle. Hahah. I still like real books better for some reason, even though it IS a pain to get new books once you’re done with the old ones though, but I don’t see a point buying the books when you’re only going to read it once. Well, for me anyway. I just read a book once, no matter how good it was. LOL.
Well, I’m not sure what kind of books you like… But my favorite authors are Sophie Kinsella, Madeleine Wickham, Emily Giffin, and Nicholas Sparks. Haha. I’m sure you can figure out the genre from that. =P I don’t really read too many geeky books, so… If you’re looking for that, sorry! =( Hehe.
doesn’t have to be geeky. i prefer fluffy to geeky
I WAS GONNA GET A KINDLE. But I have an iPod and I read stuff on there daily so I thought whats the point. Haha.
I’m so glad you are enjoying your Kindle. I’ve got some good book recommendations for you:
Never Let me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Fight Club by Chuck Palaniuk (actually any book by him except for Snuff and Pygmy are good reads)
Anything by Sarah Dessen, she’s just fun.
Everything is Illuminated by Johnathan Safran Foer
if you need more let me know! =]
thanks!
I really loved Fight Club the movie, and so I feel like if the book is better, then I’ll feel bad about the movie and if the movie’s better, it’s a waste to read the book. so we’ll see about that one. I’ll check out the others though :)
HITCHHIKER’S!!!!!!!! Oh wow, never have I NOT felt so horrid about using so many exclamation points. Usually I think they are unsightly. But the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? I’m positive you’re talking about that – it’s one of my favourite book series and you ought to get your hands on it. :)
I read some iBooks before I lost my iPhone. What sucked was that I was halfway through The Jewel of Seven Stars by Bram Stoker and now it’s gone and I can’t find a copy of the book elsewhere… ~_~
I was hoping for a huge “YES!” before hitting ‘read the rest of this entry’. I’m so glad this has helped you read more though. You can never have too much to read. Pick anything! <3
I got tired of the free crap and bought Hitchhiker’s Guide the other night. So far, it’s very amusing. I knew I’d like it though. I’ve been meaning to read it for like the last 15 years or so, so I guess it’s about time. I kinda wish I never saw the movie though, not just because the movie was bad, but because I’m picturing those characters in my head. Luckily the movie was so long ago, I barely remember it, except for the singing dolphins. I liked the singing dolphins. Unfortunately the movie went downhill after that.
Since textbooks are so expensive, lots of my friends ressolve to electronic books, however i love reading a textbook than from screen… I get headaches -__-;;
I’m glad you’re enjoying your kindle though.. it definitely very useful for people who love reading books and don’t mind reading it from the screen.
Congrats on your Kindle! Too bad I can’t access the store in Singapore. I only read non-fiction so I’m probably not the best person to recommend books. My fave author non-fiction authors of the moment is Alain de Botton though. :)
