Not much going on around Digg lately, so I turn you attention back to the sugar network. Posted on CitizenSugar last week, eHarmony Says Love Is Not For Liars or Gays?
Well, the liars part isn’t very controversial obviously. If you’re married, you probably shouldn’t be hanging around a dating site. They reject people for other reasons though. 20% of their applicants actually, and never say why. It’s their site, right? Who really cares. What’s the big issue?
In June, a California judge will hear a plaintiff’s motion for class certification in a case that accuses eHarmony of discrimination against gays and lesbians. It’s sneaky. eHarmony does not reject gays, it’s just not an option. When creating a profile, the only choices on the site are “man seeking woman” or “woman seeking man.” A ha! An eHarmony lawyer explains that since the matches are based on unique scientific research on heterosexual combos, the fact it hasn’t done the same kind of work on gay unions makes them less worthy matchmakers.
Now, while I think the site should be open to gays and lesbians, they shouldn’t be sued over it. Their reason may be legit. If eHarmony doesn’t want the extra business, their loss.
Even if they didn’t have a reason, it’s their site and they should be able to include and exclude people as they like. If someone finds it offensive, then they shouldn’t visit the site. If it was a site only for homosexuals, no one would care. I’m sure there is a site like that out there, just as there are dating sites for particular religions like JDate.
How do they have a case? Well, the site clearly has a Christian bias, but they don’t really say they do. And if you read some of the comments from the original article, they kinda make you wanna throw up.
Comment: Good for eHarmony. I wish more businesses would stand up for a real value system and not bend for the tiny fraction of screwballs trying to force thier warped ideas on the rest of us. Christian values need to be reintruduced to this country, after all our USA was founded on Christian principals.
I’m sorry, wha? Warped ideas? How is loving someone a warped idea? I still fail to understand how anyone can think homosexuality is wrong. Is it more Christian to live your life alone and in pain??? Would Jesus really want that? Sorry, but that seems more “warped” to me. I just want everyone to have the right to be happy, but hey, I’m a crazy agnostic liberal!
Anyway, while I don’t think it’s right for anyone to force their beliefs on anyone else, this isn’t really the case here. If they did in fact win the lawsuit, then there would just be another option. No one’s saying, hey, if you sign up for eHarmony, you have to be gay and go out with other gay people! Meanwhile, at the moment, eHarmony is saying you have to be straight. Still, it is their business and they shouldn’t have to modify their site and do extra research just to include a certain group of people if it goes against their beliefs. However, if the site clearly imposes Christian values, they should say so.
Really, no one is forcing anything. You don’t have to visit eHarmony and after reading all of this, quite honestly, I don’t think anyone should.

Wow… that comment is pretty harsh. Even if they’re based on Christian principals, there’s “Christian ways” in order to relay it. This is still a hard topic to even go upon. If you agree, you seem like you have no morals. If you disagree, you seem narrowminded. It’s really all based on one’s decisions and beliefs. If eHarmony stands against it, it’s their right to that belief. There are tons of other sites that allows genders and different sexuality all around. I agree with you though; if they impose Christian values, they should state it in the terms and conditions or something.
Ah that is funny. I never really noticed before but one of the dating sites I used to go to (just for kicks and giggles) had the option of girl -girl, boy -boy lol. And the good old US of A was founded by revolting against the British (who are still technically a Christian nation) so… great principles guys. Most countries were “founded” in a similar sense actually. Good times xD
LOL, I’ve never visited dating sites before, but wow, I see… Yeah, you’re right, you DON’T have to go to those sites if you don’t like how they run their site.
I’m kind of on the fence about the whole thing really, I don’t have a partner, but if I did, and the opportunity arose for us to live together before we married, I don’t think I would shy away from doing so for fear of it making us more likely to divource in later life.
