I can control most other aspects of my life, but sleep owns me. It doesn’t matter if I’m tired, completely exhausted, cold, hot, cranky, sick, excited … I sleep, I don’t sleep. And it doesn’t matter what time I go to bed or how tired I am, Mr Sun gently wakes me up, bright and early, every morning before my alarm clock does. That’s why I started getting up early to exercise. If I’m awake anyway, right?
But this is nothing new. I’ve always had trouble with sleep. Some of my earliest memories are of being wide awake at nap time. I had a really hard time in elementary school a lot of nights. Eventually I learned tricks that helped me fall asleep, but sometimes my mind is so busy or I’m so tired, I just can’t focus enough to use them.
After drafting an email in my head about our wedding video that we still don’t have, after thinking about how much more I like dogs than babies, after a quality fight with Bryan, after five bathroom breaks, I finally fell asleep. Then Mr Sun came up. I said fuck off, but he persisted. The longer I was lying, thinking about nothing, the more awake I became. I finally got up around 8, but I was too tired to stand. I let my body rest for another half an hour and by that time, my brain was completely awake and writing this blog post.
It didn’t help that dinner took hours last night. Easiest soup in the world my ass! Any soup that involves peeling and chopping butternut squash is not easy. Plus I has to call Roy in the middle of my chopping which slowed me down. Even with Bryan’s help, that alone took like an hour. Then I had to chop apples and mince garlic and then cook the damn soup. The glass cracked on the blender, soup went everywhere. End result: good, but so not worth the effort. It was 9 by the time I finished.
Happy things yesterday: I finally met Brian’s daughter, Natalie. I was kinda hoping her super cuteness would get me all excited for the having a baby thing, nope. I still don’t get nearly as excited about babies as I do dogs, or, ya know, ice cream. I don’t dislike babies or kids. I enjoy hearing stories about the cute things they do, seeing pictures, watching videos, but I prefer the company of dogs .. or ice cream. I assume that when I actually have a baby, that’ll change, but it’s hard to get to that point when you don’t really want one badly enough to do something about it.
We also went to Pier 1 yesterday and picked out some furniture. We couldn’t buy it because it wouldn’t fit in our car, but it shouldn’t be a problem once I get my new car. In the meantime, I opened up a credit card to save some money and because the sales lady was super nice and helpful.
Off to eat my chocolatey breakfast and read all of your blogs :)

For the average chopper maybe 15min prep; It seems that I am speedy squash preper! I will put it to the test just to debunk your comments though and will make a video when my new iPad arrived.
Also, sounds like you need some sleep. Be well, Carolyn
dude, I don’t know. Maybe our knives suck, but even my husband got super frustrated trying to peel the squash. I couldn’t do it at all, I wasn’t strong enough.
Oh man, that soup adventure… At least it was good!
I’m sorry you have trouble sleeping =/ I used to have trouble sleeping, too, but I started taking these little Valerian pills whenever I felt like it was going to be one of those nights where I wouldn’t fall asleep because my head is too busy. It relaxes me, and it’s been easier to fall asleep since.
As for my credit card issue… I’ve never needed one before =P I can use my regular bank pass anywhere in the world, and have credit on my bank account, should I need it. Everything is done with your usual bank account, over here. Except paying the American government, that is XD
I have problems sleeping too! It seems like I never go to bed before 3am. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to completely fix this, but I do have a couple of suggestions that have helped me.
Buying ‘blackout’ curtains to prevent automatically waking up from the sun (very important to set your alarm clock though or you might end up sleeping all day. . which I learned the hard way, lol). I bought mine here: http://jcp.is/l8M6PL
Another trick I use is a sleep mask like this: http://amzn.to/m2DQN6 (silk or satin is the best since it’s the least likely to leave those weird ‘pillow’ creases on your face in the morning) which does aid in falling/staying asleep but it’s definitely something you have to get used too at first.
There are also things that you can do to make your bedroom more relaxing to help you fall asleep faster (like painting the room a light soothing color, adding a dimmer switch to lights, placing vanilla scented candles in the room) which I’ve noticed do help me fall asleep faster once I’m actually laying bed. . now if only there was a trick to force me to actually do that at a decent time, lol.
lol, we have blackout curtains! they’re much better than the shades we had before, but they don’t block out all the light. I tried using those sleep masks in college, but I couldn’t get used to it.
Oh really? Lol, wow, you must have a super bright room in the morning! I have them combined with thicker plastic blinds like these: http://bit.ly/m0TWxH maybe that does the trick? Unless, you have those too, then I’m stumped, lol.
Yeah, I know what you mean. Sleep masks can be a pain for the first several weeks but I forced myself to do it & I can’t sleep without one now.
I am sorry that you are struggling to sleep, I am lucky that I find it quite easy to sleep. I have a regular sleeping pattern, varies a little from night to night but is generally regular. I tend to go to bed between 10pm and midnight and get up at 7am to 9am. However, it is a little more difficult in the winter because I am tempted to sleep from 7pm to 10am due to the long dark winter nights.
Hmm, do you guys get direct sunlight in the mornings then? Because I have blackout curtains, and they’re dark enough for me to sleep in until around 9am or so on the weekends when I’d wake up on my own. My room doesn’t get direct sunlight, so maybe that’s why it’s not as bright? I’m a light sleeper, so I’d have trouble sleeping too. Hope you’re able to figure something out. =/
What kind of credit card did you get? Is this your 2nd one?
As for the whole baby deal, I know what you mean… =/
yes, the sun rises right into our bedroom, lol
it’s a store credit card. it’s my second store card and i have two others, so it’s my fourth one, or sixth if you count my two accounts that are closed.
I’m still young but eh, the baby thing is in at least another ten years, I’m positive about that. :P They are cute but nothing really makes me want to have one. o_o I think about names I’d call my future children and I love thinking up names, but I still don’t actually want a baby.
Ugh, sleep is so hard to deal with. Mr Sun wakes me up all the time before my alarm. I love my mornings but when I get an opp to sleep in, I’ll sleep in until 9am and then I get up; anything after 9 and I get pissed off that I didn’t wake up early enough. Mr Sun always wakes me up beforehand… it sucks you’ve had problems for a while with sleeping. :( I’ve been trying to sleep earlier lately, gah. Absolutely not working haha.
