Since I wrote a post about my mom for mother’s day, I shall write one about my daddy as well.

My daddy is unique. He’s a conservative Catholic who has covered the house in the Poconos with fertility statues. He thinks “something,” you know solar activity or aliens landing, is going to happen in 2012. He really likes the history channel. He likes weapons. He gave Bryan a crossbow for Christmas this past year and a sword the year before. His musical interests include show tunes, Meatloaf, The Four Brother Four and Barbie Girl. He likes to talk about fictional characters like they’re real people.

Classic daddy exchange:
Him: I’m thinking of buying a boat this weekend
Me: What?
Him: Yeah, well, the duck won’t sink
Me: You mean for the bathtub??

We both majored in Computer Science. We’re both quiet, but silly. We think Disney World is just about the bestest place in the whole world. We like musical theater. We can watch the same movies over and over again. We love puppies. We both pick on my mom too much.

The biggest thing we have in common is our love of food. He actually eats more than I do. Unfortunately, he has diabetes. I’ve tried to make healthy, low carb desserts, but most turned out to be a disaster. I’ve accepted he’s going to eat junk no matter what, so I at least try and make some slightly healthier junk every once in a while, like the lower sugar pinapple upside-down cake I’m attempting this weekend.

He’ll go way out of his way to make me happy. Like buying me a car, paying to fix it when it needed a new wheel bearing costing 4 times the original estimate, letting me borrow his car while the repairs took place, spending an hour on the phone with me while I waited for the cops after I got into an accident with the car, and driving to the dealership 20 minutes away three times so I could buy my new car.

We used to sing in the car on the way to camp when I was little. Mostly theme songs to TV shows: The Adams Family, F-Troupe, Gilligan’s Island. Sometimes we’d play Name That Tune.

In sixth grade I had to buy a dress for graduation and me, my dad and my grandma went to store after store trying to find a dress that fit. Finally we found one at JCPenny. My grandma and I were off elsewhere while he was paying for it. He came over with two dresses. He said it was buy one, get one, so he just picked a random dress in my size. Turned out, that one looked better and that’s the one I wore. He’s always been good at picking out clothes and accessories for me. He brought back several shirts from Paris that I still wear and I used the wallet he got me until it was worn.

He’s not a fan of this picture, but everyone else is :P

And a happy father’s day to my awesome fathers-in-law :)

  1. Love this blog post :)! And the photo is full of life & joy!! It’s not fathers day in Finland.. but I can relate to your celebrations today. I’m close with my dad, and we are too both computer scientists. He has thought be a lot about life, patience and, above all, music. He’s just such a chill person. They say girls tend to look for boys that remind them of their fathers. I’d say it’s not completely a lie.

  2. Awww, I love your post!!! Your Dad looks like such a fun guy and sounds like an awesome person in general. My Dad also has diabetes and we try and make lower carb and sugar desserts, but he too eats what he wants, haha. Hope you have a great day with your Dad today!

  3. Aww your dad is seriously amazing! I hope he had a good father’s day! :) I think it’s awesome that he helped you out picking clothes. My dad could never do that, I’m a bit envious. My mum’s the one who knows all about fashion and style. My dad and I aren’t all that close, but I know he has a great love for food like your dad. I love food too, but I’m sure to watch what I eat. My dad likes eating a lot of junk but randomly he’ll go and eat some fruit or veges. XD I think my dad just likes eating anything…
