A quick acne update: No bad breakouts since my declaration of hate for my skin on twitter. I guess my skin heard me.
I did buy the Clarisonic brush off of ebay. I’ve been using it since Sunday. My well behaved skin seems to have more to do with the weather than the brush, but I have seen positive results already. I’ll let you know how it goes.
I spent a good amount of time the past couple of weeks doing technical interviews for the MATREX program and interns. I won’t write about the interviews because I don’t want any of them to stumble upon my blog and feel bad. I will share some good stories via email though if anyone’s interested.
It was definitely entertaining and very educational. I think the experience will definitely help me with future interviews.
Some really obvious tips I’d like to share …
There should be absolutely no spelling or grammatical errors on your resume. Have at least 2 smart people review your resume before you submit it to anyone.
Please know what’s on your resume. If you put down that you took a database class or a networking class and I ask you a simple question, you should be able to answer it. If you list a project, make sure you have something impressive to say about it. “I was sick the whole time,” is not a good answer.
If you only took an introductory programming course, you probably don’t really know C++ or Java. At the very least, you should know and understand what object oriented programming is. If you really want to be a developer, take at least one class that involves a big programming project. You pay a lot for your education, take advantage of it.
It’s OK if you have no idea how to answer a question, but if you have any clue at all, you should still try. This does not mean spitting out random nonsense. Think, then speak.
Oh, and never, EVER, suggest using GOTO. Return! I was looking for a return statement! It’s a four line function! WTF????

Glad to hear about your acne!!! =) Wow, that’s nice about the brush. Can’t buy anything online anymore… ='( I wonder if they’ll have it in stores…
Hmm, if you have the stories already written up, you can e-mail it to me. LOL. If not, then it’s no big deal, don’t want you spending your time on it. Hehe.
LOL, I actually caught a typo on my resume before, but I don’t remember when it was… I don’t think that many people saw it, since I didn’t send it around too much. LOL.
Woah, “I was sick the whole time”?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! LOL…
LOL about Goto!! I haven’t used that since Basic back in high school! Or maybe it was an introductory programming class my freshman year of college. LOL. Yeah, all I use are returns in functions. LOL.
Wow, I wonder if I’d make it through your interview… Haha. Or maybe it just depends on the job, and I’m not fit for what you’re interviewing for. Hehe.
I’m toughest on the web developers since I know that stuff :P
They sell the clarisonic brush at Sephora and Nordstrom. It’s more expensive though.
I don’t know what GOTO is, or any other programmer lingo, really. But soon I will have to conduct volunteer interviews – any tips or something that you found surprisingly hard about interviewing people?
I have no clue about what you’re talking about. Guess you know much more then I do when it comes to programming.
And yes, you should have several people review your resume. A friend of mine didn’t before she sent hers into a company recently, and her butchered resume pretty much lost her the interview.
I haven’t had any acne breakouts either. I been making sure, I put on my skin lotion twice a day (which I didn’t do in the morning-bad me), but I’ll put it on in the night. I just went through my resume about 2 days ago and I found 1 error. 2 librarians said “that my resume looked really professional”. Why, thank you since I had to fax out my resume. I’m going to try and have one of my mom’s friends go through my resume and a couple of others. I don’t think I ever used that GOTO before. Have a nice night :) .
