Where’s My Hoverboard?

So that image from BTTF floating around the internet saying that Doc originally planned to travel to 7/5/2010, that’s fake. Doc did say he was going 25 years into the future, but he never specified the date. In part II they traveled 30 years into the future, so we have another five years and a few months to go.

Coincidentally though, Bryan and I were talking about BTTF II the other day. We were discussing how poorly the movie predicted the future. It’s not 2015 yet, but really, they weren’t close. Where were the cell phones? The internet? Marty did have like five fax machines in his house. Ah, the house that responded to voice commands. Turns out making computers understand speech, much harder than we thought it would be. It’s good for automated customer service numbers, but that’s about the extent of its usefulness. Well, that and some really funny texts I get from Google trying to transcribe my mom’s voicemails. You can program your house to respond to voice commands, but it would probably be more frustrating than helpful.

Flying cars? Never gonna happen. Hoverboards? Not so much. Self tying shoes and self drying jacket? Waste of money. Re-hydrated Pizza Hut? That’d be useful.

We still play video games with our hands, we don’t have dust-repellent paper, dogs can’t walk themselves, they still can’t predict the weather that accurately and they haven’t abolished lawyers.

Some things weren’t too far off. There are restaurants that have you order off of screens, no pop-up Pepsi though. We are well capable of video chat, but we much rather text. We have annoying 3D, we have thumbprint locks, we have many television stations that we can watch simultaneously, and our TVs alert us to who’s calling.

They could have done a little research into what technologies people were working on rather than just going from their imagination, but then it wouldn’t be quite as entertaining :)
